The Essence of the Law
Effective July 1, 2010 all coaches in Connecticut required to hold a coaching permit must take the initial concussion course - Module 15, an annual concussion review and beginning in 2015 a refresher course must be taken every 5 years. This edict includes any coach of a school program K-12 including cheer, dance & intramurals. Also, the CIAC requires this of all member schools which includes parochial schools.
Initial Training Course - Module 15 Concussions & Neck Injuries
(and other injuries associated with concussions)
This is the one and only initial training course required for all coaches prior to them starting as a coach. It is required for anyone applying for a 5 year renewable permit or a 1 year temporary permit. It can be taken as a stand alone module (.3 ceu) or as part of the 45 clock hour course offered to non-teachers seeking a permit. School districts may offer this course in person when taught jointly by their athletic director and athletic trainer. The online course has videos and narrations so make sure you have speakers turned on. Connecticut Coaches Concussion Refresher Course
(for ALL coaches EXCEPT football coaches)
Begining in 2015 all coaches (EXCEPT FOOTBALL COACHES) must take this concussion refresher course within 5 years from having taken their initial Module 15 course and the refresher course must be taken every 5 years thereafter. This course is online FREE to all coaches but cannot be accessed unless you have already taken Module 15 and your information is in our data base correctly. There is no ceu credit for this course. This online course can be taken on a computer or an Ipad/tablet device but not on a phone and must be completed in one sitting. FOOTBALL Coaches Concussion Refresher & Best Practices Course (MODULE 51)
Begining in 2015 all football coaches must take a concussion refresher course Module 51 (.3 ceu) within 5 years from having taken their initial Module 15 course and the refresher must be taken every 5 years thereafter. The football refresher course includes best practices in coaching the sport of football.
